Lake Tahoe  - Here is a brief overview:

Lake Tahoe is the highest elevation alpine lake in the United States.  On the border of California and Nevada, Tahoe is a year-round vacation destination offering the best in indoor and outdoor adventures.  At Lake Tahoe you can enjoy water sports, hiking, mountain biking and boat cruises in the summer... or take to the ski slopes in the winter.  Either way, after a long day of exhilarating outdoor fun, you can head to Harrah's, Caesars or a number of casino's on the north or south shore for top name entertainment and gaming... or out to dine at one of Tahoe's many fine restaurants!

Exploring South Shore:

Tallac Historic Site - this 75 acre historic site preserves some of Tahoe's most lavish lakeside mansions from the late 1800's and early 1900's.  Stop in the museum or take a guided tour of one of the mansions.  This is also the setting for the Valhalla Arts and Music Festival with summer-long activities.  For details link to:  www.valhalla-tallac.com.

Taylor Creek Visitor's Center and Rainbow Creek Trail - on Highway 89, just north of the Tallac Historic site.  Take the kids on a short and scenic nature trail.  Late September and early October is the best time to see the running of the Kokanee salmon in Taylor Creek along with fall leaves.

Camp Richardson - You can camp here or stay in the lodge or in a cabin.  There's a public swimming beach, boat rentals, parasailing and boat rides.  Dine on the lakefront at the Beacon Bar & Grill.

Lake Tahoe Historical Society Museum - 3058 Highway 50, next to the South Lake Tahoe Chamber of Commerce in Al Tahoe.  This small museum features relics from local native American tribes and artifacts and photo from the early days at Tahoe.

Heavenly Gondola - Take a ride to the top of the world on Heavenly's new gondola which will take you up over 2,000 above lake level.  From the top you'll get a breath taking view of Lake Tahoe and also be able to take off on one of the many hiking trails.

Heavenly Ski Resort - one of the largest ski resorts in the US, with runs in both California and Nevada... one is 5.5 miles long!  Many ski runs have spectacular views.

Zephyr Cove - Catch a ride on the steam paddle wheeler...the MS Dixie for a ride across Lake Tahoe to Emerald Bay.  Scenic cruises are offered along with longer sunset dinner cruises.

West Shore Sights to See:

Emerald Bay - on Highway 89 is accessible by boat or by a steep 1 mile hike from the visitor parking area.  At the end of the trail, you'll be treated to a look into the past at Vikingsholm, a 38 room mansion designed after a 9th century Norse fortress.  Tours of the home are offered by park rangers through the summer.

D.L.Bliss State Park - on Highway 89 between Emerald Bay and Meeks Bay.  This park offers 1,830 acres of trails and beach access to Rubicon Point.  Naturalist programs are offered in the summer.

Ehrman Mansion & Sugar Pine Point State Park - Highway 89, 1 mile south of Tahoma. Built in 1902, this two story Queen Anne style house is another example of Tahoe's best preserved summer estates.  Tours are offered in the summer season.

Tahoe Maritime Museum - Highway 89 in Homewood.  Open Friday through Monday through the summer season with exhibits on early Tahoe boats, outboard motors and hydroplane racing at Lake Tahoe.

Along the North Shore:

Gatekeeper's Log Cabin Museum - on Highway 89, 1 block south of "Fanny Bridge".  This museum is reconstructed on the site of the original gatekeeper's cabin that served as the residence of the keeper of the Truckee river dam.  The museum has displays about Lake Tahoe and an extensive Indian artifact display.

Watson Cabin Living Museum - 560 North Lake Blvd, Tahoe City.  This honeymoon cottage overlooking the lake was built in 1989.  It is furnished with many original pieces.

Alpine Meadows Ski Area, two mountain peaks and about 100 groomed trails 6 miles west of Tahoe City.

Squaw Valley USA - Built originally to house the Winter Olympics, Squaw Valley continues to offer excellent ski terrain, along with ice skating, restaurants in the winter along with hiking trails, swimming pools and spectacular scenery in the summer time.
