Lake Tahoe - Here is a brief overview: Lake Tahoe is the highest elevation alpine lake in the United States. On the border of California and Nevada, Tahoe is a year-round vacation destination offering the best in indoor and outdoor adventures. At Lake Tahoe you can enjoy water sports, hiking, mountain biking and boat cruises in the summer... or take to the ski slopes in the winter. Either way, after a long day of exhilarating outdoor fun, you can head to Harrah's, Caesars or a number of casino's on the north or south shore for top name entertainment and gaming... or out to dine at one of Tahoe's many fine restaurants! Exploring South Shore:
Tallac Historic Site - this 75 acre historic site preserves some of Tahoe's most lavish lakeside mansions from the late 1800's and early 1900's. Stop in the museum or take a guided tour of one of the mansions. This is also the setting for the Valhalla Arts and Music Festival with summer-long activities. For details link to: www.valhalla-tallac.com. Taylor Creek Visitor's Center and Rainbow Creek Trail - on Highway 89, just north of the Tallac Historic site. Take the kids on a short and scenic nature trail. Late September and early October is the best time to see the running of the Kokanee salmon in Taylor Creek along with fall leaves. From the top you'll get a breath taking view of Lake Tahoe and also be able to take off on one of the many hiking trails. Heavenly Ski Resort - one of the largest ski resorts in the US, with runs in both California and Nevada... one is 5.5 miles long! Many ski runs have spectacular views. Zephyr Cove - Catch a ride on the steam paddle wheeler...the MS Dixie for a ride across Lake Tahoe to Emerald Bay. Scenic cruises are offered along with longer sunset dinner cruises.
Emerald Bay - on Highway 89 is accessible by boat or by a steep 1 mile hike from the visitor parking area.
